
In the same month as The Artist – a widely-acclaimed tribute to old cinema – took the Oscars by storm, Europe’s biggest cinema chain, Odeon Cinemas, announced it had cut a third of its projectionist jobs.
Digital technology’s latest victim is the 35mm film projector, and it has left hundreds of projectionists, who have dedicated their lives to this art, suddenly without jobs. Has the digital age now erased the roots of cinema? And have modern audiences even noticed the loss of film?
